Anxiety is a feeling of stress and tension. It may be a mild problem, or it may be an extreme disorder that is characterized by the inability to control one’s body.

This feeling can occur without any warning, sometimes it can even be accompanied by panic attacks. It can happen to anyone at any time and can strike anyone at any age. We often hear of people who have had severe anxiety as well as successful athletes and actors.

Anxiety can come about in many ways, some are the result of the thoughts that may trigger it while others are the symptoms of it. Some may experience tension in the chest, shortness of breath, cold sweat, trembling and palpitations, and others may feel dizziness, tightness in the chest, chest pains, heavy breathing, apprehension, and fear.

A person with an anxiety disorder has a strong feeling of nervousness, fear, and panic. Other people feel scared and paranoid. To the afflicted the normal routine of life seems to become a terrible challenge. They fear the worst and are constantly on the run.

Regular anxiety sufferers become listless, avoid going places or spending time alone, and are unwilling to take risks. They may even have difficulty concentrating. The mind cannot concentrate properly and all sorts of thoughts will pop into their minds. This causes the person to become exhausted and lose concentration.

Often they may be sad, yet instead of feeling the emotional feeling and the physical feeling, they are in a state of trance. They may be suspicious of other people and think they have done something wrong or are being watched. The thoughts become so intense that the victim may have nightmares. This is the most common symptom.

The way that we think about the world and our emotions manage to overwhelm us. This leads to a mental and emotional attack and if not checked can lead to panic attacks. There are symptoms that may be accompanied by anxiety disorders. These symptoms include feelings of fear, dread, impending doom, terrible forebodings, helplessness, impending doom, and the list goes on.

Some anxiety disorders may affect the thought process while others may only affect the emotions. For example, a person may have anxiety, but not show any symptoms of panic, but not showing any signs of fear.

Individuals with anxiety disorders suffer for days, weeks, or months before relief is found. Sometimes, the therapy is stopped because of the anxiety. When the person is treated with medication and therapy the problem is generally relieved after just a few sessions.

With all the things we do daily it is easy to forget that there are things that we need to think about. Sometimes we just need a few moments to get back into the flow of our lives. Thankfully, some simple treatments such as taking deep breaths and counting backward from ten can help to de-stress, focus, and get the rest one needs to return to the everyday routines.

Most people with anxiety problems only have a few symptoms. It may be that a family member has had panic attacks, and they know what to expect. Or, the person may not realize what the cause of their anxiety may be.
